Fiberglass tubs and shower bases (including “one-piece” molded fiberglass units) have been a common bath installation product for years. When manufactured, these fiberglass products are coated and sealed with gel-coat which gives the new product a gloss and sheen. Through normal use and cleaning the gel-coat eventually wears off and leaves the fiberglass material exposed to water.

As a porous material, fiberglass will allow water to penetrate its surface creating the environment for mold and mildew to grow and spread. Abrasive cleaners can sometimes remove the stains and discoloration, but the environment to re-grow the mold and mildew doesn’t change, which means those stains come back over and over again.
